The Crow and the Fox

By Adam Messer

The Crow sat smiling down by the river bank on a warm summer’s day.

“Why so happy?” asked the sly fox.

“The day is sunny, the water is warm, and the fish are many!” Crow said.

Fox wagged his tail. “What will you do when winter comes and the river freezes?”

Crow shook his feathers and trotted to the bank and scooped up a little minnow and ate it.

Crow looked back at the lazy fox sitting under the oak tree’s shadow. “Same as I always do, perch up in my nest in the very tree your lazy bones sleep under. I’ll be safe and warm while you sleep the winter away.”

“You will never have enough food to last you all winter, since you hunt for the day,” Crow sneered at Fox.

The fox chuckled, “yes, yes my old friend, you are right. I shall make do when the time comes.”

Summer left, autumn leaves blew and winter’s first snow came quickly.

Crow slept in his nest high above in the old oak tree, dry and warm from the cold.

Suddenly he heard the branches rustling and as he opened his eyes, he saw Fox perched next to him.

“Fox! You scared the devil out of me! What ever are you doing out of your den in this terrible weather?”

Fox grinned wryly.

“I’m hungry.”
