Phillip Russertt loves comic books, and he is a writer, publisher, and distributor.

Please introduce yourself.

Hello. My name is Phillip Russertt and I am a lifelong lover of the comic book medium. I started collecting as a child and later became a convention runner, Art rep, writer, editor, publisher and now distributor.

What genres do you write and why?

So far, I have written superhero, horror, fantasy, family friendly all ages, a prose book based on theological fiction and i am currently writing a fantasy novel.

What is your earliest memory of reading?

My earliest memory of reading comics was 9 years old when I saw Uncanny X-men #115 on a spinner rack.

When did you know you wanted to write? How did it happen?

As soon as I saw my first comic book i started reading. It eventually led to me reading prose books. I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series at 9 years old and I have read them four times since.

What’s one of your favorite scenes in one of your books?

In one of my horror stories there is an antagonist that gruesomely wears the skin of their captive and mocks them in the process. The artist did a magnificent job of capturing the visual.

What makes a good character? A bad one?

A good character is someone people can relate to and root for. They have to have struggles to overcome. If the reader isn’t invested in them there is no reason to care about the possible consequences in the story. A bad character is one that has no flaws and everything comes easy. I always feel he better the Antagonist the better the protagonist.

What moves the story for you?

Its cliche but the hero’s journey. Having your character starting at a point that is flawed or having an obstacle to overcome and progressing them internally and externally to the point of resolution.

What is your favorite book and why?

LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring because it was such an immersive read. It brought you into the world and had characters to invest in and themes that resonated.

What do you want to say to your audience?

Story telling is the most powerful form of art in my opinion. Whether it’s a story of redemption, the underdog or the hero’s journey well written tales can inspire and provide a catharsis by temporarily taking us out of the real world which we all know can be hard. Philbo publishing strives to do that, and we hope you invest in our stories as we hope to provide that entertainment and resonate our readers on a deeper level. We want to give the readers stories that they will share with friends and family and talk about with love and joy.

What advice do you have for new writers?

Write, write and write. Don’t be intimidated and don’t worry about if its good or not. Just start writing as if telling a campfire story. You can always go back and edit what you wrote. Enjoy the journey of creating new worlds.

Do you have anything else you would like to add?

I love comic books and feel they are the greatest entertainment medium in the world. I hope to leave my mark on a medium that gave me so much.
