Please introduce yourself.

Hi, my name is Brandy Tabor, I am a wife, mother and multidisciplinary artist, You will find me anywhere online under Brandy Tabor Indigenous Art.

What is art?

To me art is both a translation and reflection of your soul, it is creativity that was never snuffed out as a child and is so powerful that through out the ages it has been art that reveals the history of it’s time. It is a gift to be able to create and spiritually makes me feel connected to the creator of the universe, to me he gave artists eyes to see life through a different lens. It is also one of the only connections I have to my heritage.

What is your earliest memory of making art?

Like most children, I remember crayons, markers, coloring books, drawing comics. Fun creative things.

When did you know you wanted to become an artist? How did it happen?

As a child I grew up in Williams Lake, British Colombia. I remember being so influenced by the totem poles and beautiful artwork, and meeting a man named Sunny that was always at Salvation Army. He would carve beautiful walking sticks that reminded me of totem polls. In grade 5 at my school my teachers realized that I was a gifted artist and I was placed into a gifted art program, where I was able to test several different mediums of art, from digging my own clay to make pottery, water color, and many other types. Usually they let kids stay in it for 1 year, but I was kept in it for 3 years. It solidified my decision that I would always stay creating. All through out school it’s all I did every class I was in.

What mediums do you use for your creations?

As an Artist, I am multifaceted, this is why I chose to mostly focus on various native artworks, because there are many mediums to work with, from working with hides and furs, beadwork, painting ( I love acrylic), carving and so on. Usually all I have to do to make something is see it, However, I do have a newfound respect and admiration for people who bead! It is very challenging. I also love to draw and can create very realistic pieces, I have dabbled with tattoo art, digital art, logo making, music, community projects, wood burning, Ice and snow carving, and in most recent years have completed many murals now. It is very exciting to do many different styles.

What’s one of your favorite pieces of art? Why?

I would say that my favorite piece is one that I did for my husband of a boy playing hockey, my husband is a huge hockey fan and a graceful skater I have always loved watching him on the ice. I also painted another one recently I call Tree of life for a very incredible lady and dear friend. I guess their my favorite because they represent two of my favorite humans in the world.

What moves you? What moves art?

I am very community driven and am very passionate about uplifting people, 80 percent of my job is about people and the remaining 20 percent is about the physical art. I always lead with good intent in my heart towards people as well as my art. I just want to bring beauty and creativity to spaces that need it and feel privileged to meet so many incredible people along the way.  So I guess the answer to both of those is community.

What do you hope someone feels when they see your art?

I am currently working at an addictions Treatment Centre doing multiple murals and was speaking with a client the other day, she told me that one of my murals got her through the night, that meant so much to me to bring someone else some peace. I want to bring light to a dark world.
